Separate & Compartmentalize
The words to live by for the long term traveler.
In four years I have managed to lose a staggeringly small amount of kit to the ‘stupid’ category. Don’t get me wrong, ive been robbed more than id like to count, but I’m not one for leaving my phone in the hostel if you know what I mean?
I attribute this to compartmentalization. A place for everything, and everything in it’s place, as they say.
Moving regularly on the road means early starts in strange hotel rooms with elderly Vietnamese ladies yelling at you to stop pocketing the fingernail-sized piece of soap. Bleary-eyed packing is where things get left behind and lost. Dozens of times I’ve been zipping up my pack, an hour from being in another country, and realized there is a big gap in my pack – an entire smaller bag like these from Ziploc.
Realizing something was missing in the first place would not have been possible if everything was loose. It makes repacking even easier and able to effectively due on autopilot, a handy thing for the long term traveler.
